06/29/2009 - "sail2horizons" - MOBOTIX Cameras Sail Twice Around The World, Non-Stop
Bernt Lüchtenborg, a former building contractor from Brake in Germany, has some big ideas: To sail around the world, twice, alone and without setting foot on land – he calls his project sail2horizons.
As if sailing around the world twice was not ambitious enough, after the first circumnavigation (“sailing with the wind, as a warm-up,” as he flippantly refers to it), he plans to turn around and sail against the prevailing wind for a second round. Of course, for such a daring mission, he needs a very special boat.
Lüchtenborg has chosen a 23-year-old aluminum yacht custom designed by Horst Glacer.

MOBOTIX is providing 3 cameras and an ExtIO for the project. In addition, the expedition will be supported financially. Working closely with the log book software TripCon, the MOBOTIX cameras will record images and video on board at specific times and also as needed using event triggers. All cameras are equipped with a 16 GB SD card and save their images internally. Every 2 to 3 days, the images are copied to a mobile USB hard drive. Images could also be transmitted via satellite telephone. |
The cameras are positioned as follows:
- A mast camera with a view of the bow
- A console camera with a view of the back of the cockpit
- An equipment carrier camera with a view of the front of the cockpit
All information on the project will be available from the website sail2horizons.

06/10/2009 - New Q24M impresses with a double frame rate
The Q24M impresses with a double frame rate, a distortion-corrected 180° panorama view and integrated video storage.
New York, USA, June 10, 2009. Mobotix, a manufacturer of complete high-resolution IP video systems, presents the new Q24M hemispheric camera which replaces the Q22M model. Special features include a more powerful microprocessor and an optimized system platform attaining twice the image frame rate as before. Even 3.1 megapixel camera images can now be transferred at a rate of up to 20 frames per second and megapixel images at a rate of up to 30 frames per second. In addition to a 3.1 megapixel color sensor, the hemispheric camera also includes an internal DVR (digital video recorder) with a maximum memory capacity of 32 GB. The DVR is based on Flash memory technology for improved reliability and extended service life. The combination of a high-resolution sensor, hemispheric lens and internal DVR allow you to view an entire room with just one Q24M camera and save the images in the camera as a high-resolution video sequence. The new Q24M hemispheric camera is available either as a basic or secure model. The Q24M Secure comes with a 4 GB MicroSD card that can record about 50,000 panorama images or four hours of video.
Distortion Correction Included
Like its predecessor, the Q22M hemispheric model, the Q24M includes an integrated distortion correction feature. This feature allows the perspective distortion of the image data to be corrected either in real time or during a subsequent search. The correction of the lens distortion automatically provides the viewer with an image that appears natural. One new feature of the Q24M is the "panorama correction". In just seconds, the user can independently fine-tune the live image in the panorama image generated by the camera.
The full image can optionally be saved for later research purposes: While you closely analyze image sections in the live image using the virtual, digital pan/tilt/zoom feature (PTZ), the camera continues to run in the background and record the entire room internally as a full image.

Discreet Design – Reliable in Extreme Situations
The camera can be connected via a network cable. A mini USB connector is available for extension modules such as the ExtIO. The connector cables are connected directly to the back of the camera using specially sealed plug-in connectors which have also been developed by Mobotix. Like all Mobotix cameras, the new Q24M has no moving parts and achieves therefore a very long service life with minimum maintenance. Thanks to its elegant and compact design, the camera can be discreetly integrated into any environment. The weatherproof housing allows the camera to be used outdoors in temperatures from -30 to +60 °C (-22 to +140°F). Despite the powerful processor, the average power consumption of the Q24M with activated MicroSD card recording is very low at 4.5 watts.
Price, Availability and Accessories
The Q24M Basic is priced at 798 $ net while the secure version costs 998 $ net. The new models are available for immediate delivery.
The extensive range of camera accessories includes various mounting sets for multiple installation options (in-ceiling mounting, on-wall, on-wall at 10°, vandalism set, as well as wall, corner and pole mounts).

03/26/2009 - ISC WEST 2009
Q22 Panorama: a better overview
New York/ Las Vegas, March 26th, 2009. Mobotix AG, manufacturer of high-resolution, complete IP video systems, presents the new hemispheric Q22 camera at the ISC WEST 2009 in booth 24077. The new panorama function of the Q22 delivers a widescreen image of a high-resolution 180° all-round view. This makes it possible to monitor entire rooms discreetly with a single camera.
The Q22 also zooms in on detail and can deliver together with the 180° panorama two more views simultaneously, making it possible to focus on two scenes and the overview at the same time. With a joystick and thanks to virtual PTZ, the camera is maintenance-free with no mechanical moving parts. High image quality is achieved through the use of a 3.1 megapixel sensor and the new hemispheric lens. Since the image distortion correction of the hemispheric view and the generating of the panoramic view take place in the camera itself, no additional load is placed on the viewer PC compared to a standard camera. Thus, displaying a large number of panoramic cameras simultaneously on a single PC is possible.
The surround function of the Q22 immediately replaces four conventional cameras and shows four different directions simultaneously in quad view on a monitor. Virtual PTZ is available for each of the four views.
16GByte full video recording
The Q22 stores high-resolution video with sound directly on the integrated Flash memory without using an external recording device or PC and therefore, without generating additional network load. Old recordings can be overwritten automatically or deleted after a predefined period. The storage capacity is sufficient for around 100,000 panorama images or 1,000 minutes of film.
MxEasy and MxCC 2.0
The MxEasy video software manages up to 16 cameras, from network connection to the graphical configuration of the recording types and times. The software is especially designed for smaller, private application solutions and downloadable free of charge. With new functions and improved user interface, the new Version 2.0 of the professional video software MxCC will be presented at the ISC WEST 2009.
VoIP door station with image storage
At the ISC WEST 2009, Mobotix will also be presenting its new door communication product line based on the international video telephony standard VoIP/SIP. When the doorbell rings, a connection is set up via the network to a videophone or a PC. A 3.1-megapixel camera with a hemispheric lens enables the entire scene outside the building to be monitored. The image section is selected using virtual PTZ via the telephone, with no mechanical movement. The door station automatically stores events outside the building with sound whenever doorbell is rang, movement is detected or switches are triggered. The station and the door opener are powered via the network cable. Physically, the VoIP door station fits into the Vario module system from the German manufacturer Siedle and can be integrated with most of the modules, such as doorbell plates, motion detectors or lighting.
Additionally in Las Vegas, special gas station cameras are presented. Four gas station lanes can be recorded simultaneously for several days on an internal semi-conductor memory without network load and without PC/DVR.
03/16/2009 - Design experts honour MOBOTIX Hemispheric Camera Q22 in the red dot award: product design 2009
In one of the most renowned and hardest international design competitions, the red dot design award, the Hemispheric Camera Q22 by MOBOTIX has just received an honourable mention from the top-class expert jury. With 3,231 products submitted to the competition, the product clearly stands out from the masses, because the design experts awarded 194 honourable mentions to those products which distinguished themselves with particularly successful design details. The festive awards presentation with more than 1,000 guests will take place in the Essen Opera House, the Aalto-Theatre, on 29 June 2009.
With the innovative MOBOTIX Hemispheric Technology, and entire room can be ideally monitored. For instance, one single, and particularly elegant and discreet, Q22 for only 698 € replaces the time-consuming and expensive installation of several standard cameras. This world novelty demonstrates again the innovative strength of MOBOTIX as a global leader for megapixel video security systems.
“Successful products are in so far different from less successful products that they can survive in the real world,” explains design expert Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award. “Successful participation in a design competition can already be an initial sign of a product’s later commercial success, because these competitions allow an objectification of otherwise often very subjective design decisions.” Receiving an honourable mention in an internationally renowned design competition such as the red dot design award was therefore an important indicator whether a product had the potential to succeed internationally.
Products submitted to the red dot design award are assessed by an international jury consisting of renowned design experts. They examine and test the products and assess them according to criteria such as degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, longevity, ecological compatibility and clarity of function. This year companies from 49 countries with a total of 3,231 products faced the judgement of the jury.
The exhibition of the winning products in the red dot design museum
All award-winning and honoured products will be on display from 29 June to 26 July 2009 in the exhibition “Design on stage – winners red dot award: product design 2009” at the red dot design museum on the premises of the ‘Zeche Zollverein’ World Cultural Heritage Site. With approximately 1,500 products on more than 4,000 square metres, the red dot design museum houses the largest permanent exhibition of contemporary design worldwide.
The red dot design award
Today, the red dot design award, the origins of which go back to 1955, is the largest and most renowned design competition worldwide. It consists of the individual disciplines “red dot award: product design”, “red dot award: communication design”, and “red dot award: design concept”. In 2008 the competition recorded around 11,000 entries from 61 nations in total.
