M12 DevKit night lens has stopped working

I have two M12D-DevKit cameras in operation for approx 18 months. These are dual lens, with night and day lenses, automatically switching between them according to lux level.
Recently, one of these cams has had problems with its night lens (which is in the "left" position). The cam reboots every day at 03:30 and, it being dark, needs to use the night (left) lens. EVen when it is daylight, the camera does not switch to the "day" lens. The system log lists the following messages for this failure (this one is from the daytime when I tried to manually switch to the night lens):
E 2009-02-09 17:12:47 EVENT Image Camera driver not installed (aqmode=left)! Check cabling.
E 2009-02-09 17:12:47 EVENT Process Shut down with error no. #52!
I took the cam indoors and ran some tests. Swapped the ribbon cables. Removed and reconnected the small circuit board (LEDs, buttons, speaker). Switched off the cam each time for these steps, by the way. None of these efforts seemed to make any difference: the cam's left (night) lense still did not work. I repeated the disconnect / reconnect procedure a few times, rebooting and testing each time.
Then, for no reason I could see, the left lens started working! I repeated the shutdown, disconnect/reconnect, reboot steps and the lens still worked OK. Well, my only thought is that the cam had been a little damp (not that I could detect anything visually) and that after an hour indoors it had dried out.
I kept the cam running indoors for about another hour and then reinstalled it in its proper location. A little more info here: The cam is in a small wooden cupboard (purpose built), approx 4m above ground level in the roof space of a domestic brick-built garage. Each lens is in a weather-proof plastic tubing "looking out" through a transparent sealed end.
Well, after reinstalling the cam and booting it up, I was pleased to see the left "night" lens still worked OK. It continued to work OK for the rest of that evening.
However, the next morning when I check the cam it was back to its original problem.
As a workaround I have set the cam to use only the "right" lens, i.e. the "day" one. Of course, this is useless at night, even on a long exposure setting, but the other cams provide adequate cover until the fault is fixed.
Cam details:
Model M12D-DevKit
Factory IP Address 10.2.x.x
Hardware T1r1.1.UU , 520 MHz, 128 MByte RAM
Image Sensor and Lens 1280x960: b/w (F/0.8), color (F/1.4)
Software MX-V3.0.8.7 (2007-02-27)
Can anyone suggest a solution to this? Further diagnostics I could try?
Thanks in advance.
