Reference Video motion window help

I'm trying without success to eleminate my MX 12 cam from triggering events at night. Headlights from cars passing my driveway at night are triggering events. To try to stop this from happening I created a small reference video motion window and then created a regular (non reference) video motion window of the same size and location and placed it over the reference window. These were placed in close proximity to my other video motion windows. It did not stop lights from triggering an event. The manual is a little vague on this subject.

Can someone clarify the use of reference video windows and how to correct this problem? Thanks.
