event setting in open sea

Dear all
we installed 3 mx m12 in our oceanographic tower in the Gulf of Venice (www.ve.ismar.cnr.it/piattaforma/). We're currently testing a single one both for surveillance and research http://www.ve.ismar.cnr...rma/webcam/webcamtest.html
We're trying to detect via Video Motion the unauthorised boats that enter the area but the everchanging windows produced a lot of false events.
Waves over 1 m produce pixel changes that are difficult to standardize. Obviously we can't set a reference window. I wonder if anyone around has find the correct setup for the detection of events in this environment.
Thanks in Advance

I understand your problem and it's a problem with any outdoor IP camera, like when it rains, moving clouds, wind blowing trees, or in your case, waves. What works for me, and it's not perfect by any means is to define a set of very small areas that you know won't change much unless something comes into view. So if you can point the camera in a way where say the horizon is halfway and then set motion detect areas in the upper area that is sky instead of water and set the sensitivity so that only large changes would trigger the event. Then when a boat comes into the view, it will detect an upper part of the boat and trigger the event.

This is one of the main reasons I like the M12 is that it has IR motion detection which is more realiable. To bad this won't work for you as it has a 30' limit.
